Why do home owners have to pay property tax?

Home owners pay property taxes to the municipal government to support the services of city and / or the region they live in as well as to help fund education. Usually, the city sends out tax bills twice per year. Generally, interim bills are sent based on 50 per cent of the previous year’s taxes, in January for February, March and April payments and final bills reflect new tax rates which are usually issued in June for payment in July, August and September.
